About us

As mother (Kirsten) and daughter (Emma) we have been working on informal art projects for many years. In 2013 we decided to create a truly collaborative photographic series. This project was realized after two trips to Iceland together.

Emma Powell’s fine art photography incorporates alternative photographic processes to illustrate fantasy narratives. Powell received her MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited both within the United States and internationally. Powell has taught photography at the college level for over ten years, including full-time at Colorado College and Iowa State University. She has also been an instructor, leading alternative process photography workshops at Penland School of Crafts, and other educational institutions.

Kirsten Hoving is Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus at Middlebury College. An art historian, she has specialized his modern art and the history of photography. Her most recent book is Joseph Cornell and Astronomy: A Case for the Stars (Princeton, 2009). Hoving co-foundered PhotoPlace Gallery. She recently curated the exhibition Land and Lens: Photographers Envision the Environment at the Middlebury College Museum of Art (2018). Her photographs have been exhibited in many national and international exhibitions.
